Combustion Service Engineer

The Combustion Service Engineer will provide installation, commissioning, inspection and servicing activities on a range of industrial combustion equipment and associated steam system parts on a routine/scheduled basis, or in response to unexpected faults, on sites throughout Scotland. 


Role overview

This is a highly varied role requiring the ability to deal with change and adapt to new processes.


This position requires great communication, documentation and reporting skills, along with an attention to detail and the flexibility to work in an agile environment. Due to the nature of the role some working away will be required and overtime is available regularly. Due to the nature of the role some mechanical and electrical works can be expected.


The postholder will work closely with all technical departments to deliver best-in-class service. 


Key responsibilities

  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance of combustion equipment on customer sites
  • Responding to customer callouts including participation in out of hours rota system 
  • Evaluating and resolving technical problems on-site and remotely alongside Boiler and Valve colleagues and/or site contacts
  • Fault finding, diagnosis and repair
  • Installing, commissioning, and servicing of combustion and gas equipment
  • Testing and monitoring the performance of equipment and plant
  • Providing customers with regular reports and feedback on their service requests, including completion of relevant paperwork
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with customers
  • After sales activities; providing customers with upgrade and energy saving options
  • Training and mentoring of technical staff, including apprentices, to be able to carry out a range of jobs within the combustion department
  • Participate in training and development as part of continuous personal development 
  • Participation in overtime and weekend work as operational needs arise
  • Flexibility to support business needs nationally when required

  • Educational qualifications
  • HNC/HND in Engineering (or equivalent)
  • Gas qualifications
  • COCN1, ICPN1, CIGA1, BMP1, TPCP1
  • Desirable
  • Engineering degree (or equivalent)
  • Gas qualifications: CORT1, TPCP1A, CDGA1 (others of interest)
  • IOSH Working Safely and/or safety passport including confined space
  • I-GAS Qualification (level 1, 2 and/or 3)
  • BOAS Category 2
  • 18th Edition Electrical
  • Experience
  • Essential
  • Field based service engineer experience
  • Strong awareness of combustion and gas principles
  • Previous experience with manufacturer products including: Nu-Way, GP, Oilon, Autoflame, LAMTEC, Cochran, Byworth, ICI Caldaie, Riello
  • Working with heavy workloads and prioritising jobs/duties
  • Experience in technical works reporting
  • Desirable
  • Experience in a customer facing role
  • Experience of industrial steam and pressure systems
  • An understanding or experience of industrial boiler maintenance

Hours and salary

Full-time position, Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Salary in the region of £45,000 – £65,000, depending on experience. Higher end attainable through regular participation in available overtime.
